Gotta say, Paulo Coelho and Matt Haig seem *really* harsh comparisons. I think there's much much more going on in Martel than in them, even if he can be faulted for being too whimsical/sentimental/schematic in places.

That's fair, I wouldn't put them on the exact same level even if they taste similar to me. In this case, The Iliad may just be too close to my heart. (And those illustrations of animals, which seemed to exist only to remind us Martel is the Animal Guy, sent me over the edge.)

I found Life of Pi horribly stupid and unsatisfying. The movie was (no surprise) worse, but how that ever took off I’ll never know.

Reminds me of Glorious Exploits, but that is an awesome book.

A man called Ove is a beautiful read as are all Backman's novels.
